NOAA and the University of Hawaii have created sophisticated computer models to track marine debris generated by the Japanese tsunami, but sightings in Alaska and California suggest that the coastlines may already be affected, according to the NY Times.
The debris is expected to begin washing up in the northwest Hawaiian islands this spring.
