The National Weather Service and the Hawaii State Civil Defense are joining together this month to focus public attention on tsunamis and encourage people to be prepared if one strikes the islands. The agencies also are commemorating the 159 lives lost to the April 1, 1946 tsunami, the most destructive in Hawaii’s history.

There’s a kick-off event all day today until 5 p.m. at the Bishop Museum. For information and a list of various events throughout the month and throughout the state, click here.
