The city has agreed to spend $1.4 million on environmental projects as part of a settlement to resolve its violations of environmental laws when city workers dumped more than 250 truckloads of concrete into Mailiili Stream on the Leeward Coast.
It had faced a penalty of $1.7 million for the violations.
The Hawaii Department of Health announced the settlement today. It has details on how the money will be allocated.
Nanea Kalani wrote about the settlement discussions last year. She also investigated more than 5,000 hours of overtime the city paid to workers to do the illegal dumping.
