Seventy-five years after the Kahuku Municipal Golf Course first opened on land owned by the Campbell Estate, the city is thinking about buying the property outright.

Council Chair Ernie Martin on Tuesday introduced three resolutions that would move the city closer to fee simple ownership of the nine-hole muni and the surrounding area.

He wrote that the city wants to “maintain the rural open nature of the Koolauloa community and guarantee that the city continue to provide recreational opportunities to all communities” and to address recurring flooding problems in the area.

  • Resolution 12-88 would add a golf course symbol to the Koolauloa Sustainable Communities Plan Public Infrastructure map.
  • Resolution 12-89 would urge Mayor Peter Carlisle to acquire or condemn the land beneath the golf course.
  • Resolution 12-90 would urge the mayor to acquire or condemn the land beneath Phase 5 of Kahuku Village, comprised of about 70 homes. Martin writes that the city should “subdivide, improve and preserve” the homes.

What do you think? Should the city buy the golf course and the nearby homes?
