Kym Pine has only been an announced candidate for a day or two now, and already the race for the Honolulu City Council District 1 seat is heating up.

The incumbent, Tom Berg, sent out an “URGENT” notice to Honolulu media this morning complaining about the content of what he claimed was a “push poll” designed not to gather public opinion but instead to spread falsehoods about him. He provided a link to this Youtube video, which has about eight minutes of edited audio:

The poll asks if statements made by both supporters and opponents of each candidate are convincing reasons to support or oppose each candidate. Among the statements: “When President Obama was in Hawaii attending a major international conference, Berg got so drunk at the conference that he yelled at Secret Service agents and police were called and removed him.”

Another one: “Berg has spent thousands of taxpayer dollars for campaign activities and forced his staff to campaign for him while on city time, which is against the law.”

There are questions about Berg being prone to angry outbursts that make it hard for the City Council to get anything done, and his proposal to raise taxes by “hundreds of millions of dollars.”

The female respondent on this particular call at one point asks if these are real facts, and the male caller responds, “You know, I’m not sure. They’re presented as the truth.”

In other District 1 news, Alex Santiago this week filed his nomination papers in the race, according to a new statewide candidate report
