Federal officials scolded the General Services Administration for “indefensible behavior” after a Hawaii-produced video from a 2010 GSA conference in Las Vegas surfaced. The GSA manages real estate for the federal government.

The video, which won an award at the conference, features an ukulele-strumming federal employee who jokes that he’ll “never be under investigation” by the Office of the Inspector General

The Washington Post reports that the video was made as part of a contest among the four regional offices that attended the lavish conference, and that a spokesman for the GSA called the video “another example of the complete lack of judgement exhibited during Western Regions conference.”

“Our agency continues to be appalled by this indefensible behavior,” the Post quoted spokesman Adam Elkington as having said on Thursday. ”We are taking every step possible to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again.”

Sen. Daniel Inouye said he saw the video, which he described as “not in good taste.”

“I’m not sure what purpose it served,” Inouye said in an email sent to DC808. “It was surprising to say the least but not indicative of the experience I have had with the agency throughout my career.”

Inouye said the agency’s administrator resigned, and the regional administrator was fired. He, too, called the agency’s behavior “indefensible,” and said it placed “a cloud” over GSA’s mission and the work it does in Hawaii and across the U.S.
