Amid growing tumult over Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s two picks for the state water commission, one of them — Jonathan Starr — is gaining support.

In testimony sent to the Senate Water, Land and Housing Committee, Jonathan Likeke Scheuer, who has extensive experience in water issues, gave him a vote of confidence.

He says that Starr meets the statutory requirement of “substantial experience in water resources management”:

In my work on water and other issues, I have had the opportunity to interact with him multiple times, and to me he clearly meets the minimum qualifications outlined in the law and also would contribute an important perspective to the Commission in deliberations.

However, the other nominee, Ted Yamamura, is expected to face some stiff resistance today during confirmation hearings for both candidates. Stay tuned, Civil Beat will be covering it.
