As global warming and increases in ocean acidification devastate the ocean’s coral reefs, scientists have looked into which species have a better chance of surviving.
The winners: corals with aragonite skeletons, according to the Asian Scientists.
The aragonite calcifiers – such as the well-known coralsPoritesandAcropora– have molecular ‘pumps’ that enable them to regulate their internal acid balance, which buffers them from the external changes in seawater pH.
