The humpback whale population in Hawaii, estimated at about 1,200, is believed to be growing at a rate of 7 percent per year, according to Hawaii 24/7.
Recently, more than 570 volunteers gathered data around Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island on the number of whale sightings and their surface behavior.
Volunteers collected data from 57 sites statewide. The following are the average numbers of whales sighted per 15-minute count period on each of the islands:
* Hawaii Island – 1 whale
* Kauai – 1 whale
* Oahu – 1 whale
