We know former Gov. Ben Cayetano will kill the rail project. But he’s been mum on the details of the bus rapid transit plan he’ll implement instead.

We’ve been patiently waiting for Ben Cayetano to share some of the details of the bus rapid transit plan he’s said he’ll use to address growing traffic congestion in Leeward Oahu after he kills the rail project.

He said in March that his plan would be based on the one put forward by former Mayor Jeremy Harris, and then said a detailed plan would be forthcoming in mid-April. In the weeks since that self-imposed deadline came and went, I’ve reached out to the campaign to ask for an interview; to offer him a chance to share details in an op-ed; and to invite him to come to Civil Beat headquarters to meet with our editors.

So far, no go. But some details are slowly emerging.

In an interview published last week, the Hawaii Filipino Chronicle managed to squeeze some information out of Cayetano on the subject of BRT.

Here’s his response to the BRT question in its entirety — I bolded the key section.

My proposal is a system that uses Bus Rapid Transit like Mayor Harris proposed except that I’d make some changes. Most people agreed that Harris’ proposal was fine coming in from Kapolei on the freeway. Where it met some opposition was when they decided to run the bus line down Kapiolani Boulevard. It was to be a dedicated bus lane, which faced opposition. We’ll revisit the system and look at alternatives. The beauty of a bus system is that it has the flexibility to change. So we’ll look at running it down King Street or Beretania Street. We may have to elevate it in certain areas but it’ll run on the freeway, so we won’t have to create a new elevated structure. When it enters Downtown, it will need a dedicated lane which may require taking away some parking here and there. It’s a system that’s worked in Europe, South America and Japan. It’s now starting to catch on in the U.S.
