An increasing number of homeowners and businesses are opting to install PV on their rooftops without actually purchasing the panels, the New York Times reports

The financing option, locks customers into contracts, usually for 20 years, at electricity rates below what residents would be paying their electric company. 

In Hawaii, companies such as Sunetric have been offering the option for the past couple of years through a partnership with SunRun.
