Cayetano Files to Run in Mayor’s Race
A dozen supporters waved “Cayetano for Mayor” signs and held up large canvases showing what rail would look like in downtown Honolulu as the candidate filed the paperwork at Honolulu Hale to make his election bid official.
The scene inside the packed office was solemn as Ben Cayetano “solemnly swore” to uphold the Constitution if elected. He is the first of the mayoral candidates to file; the deadline is June 5.
The late Friday morning event wrapped up outside with a five-minute speech on why he and others came out of retirement for this campaign.
Cayetano said it’ll be tough to overcome his rivals in the race — Kirk Caldwell and Peter Carlisle — who he expects will outspend him “20 to 1.”
