Hirono faces Ed Case in the Aug. 11 primary.
Hirono leads the hypothetical matchup with Lingle 50 percent to 41 percent with 9 percent undecided. The survey of 600 Hawaii voters was conducted May 16 and 17 and has a margin of error of +/- 4 percent. PPP is based in North Carolina and is sometimes referred to as Democrat-leaning but has been accurate in recent years.
The race was split 46-46 among men, and Hirono had a 53 percent to 37 percent edge among women. Hirono had 46 percent favorable rating versus 37 percent unfavorable, marginally stronger than Lingle’s 44-46 favorable-unfavorable split.
