It’s May Day in Hawaii, and Occupy Honolulu protesters aren’t about to let the occasion slip by.
The group has scheduled a day-long program at Thomas Square Park. By 1 p.m., a group of about 30 protesters had assembled there.
Under the watchful eyes of about a half-dozen HPD officers, some protesters made signs. Others were putting up a PA system (some artist will be playing later). The protesters are gathered on the grass in the park itself, because this time, Occupy organizers say they’ve got a permit.
Earlier in the day, Laulani Teale, a Hawaiian activist, was arrested around noon (screenshot from for disorderly conduct at Kapiolani Park. She was trying to approach Mayor Peter Carlisle, who was part of today’s Lei Day Program at the park’s band stand.
“She was trying to demand the return of the banners that were stolen by the police yesterday,” said Occupy protester H. Doug Matsuoka. He’s referring to yesterday’s raid on the Occupy encampment.
Above is a screen shot taken from Matsuoka’s live stream of her arrest, near the 10:00 mark.
