We asked where Hanabusa stands on the same-sex marriage, and Richard Rapoza says “she believes that the issue should be decided at the state level.” He didn’t say what she believes the decision should be.
Here’s the complete statement: “Rep. Hanabusa is in a hearing of the House Armed Services Committee, which is performing a mark-up of the National Defense Authorization Act, so she is not available to comment.
“However, the Congresswoman has been a strong supporter of the rights of gay Americans and same-sex couples. As president of the Hawaii State Senate, she was directly involved in drafting and passing Hawaii’s civil unions law.
“In Congress she supported the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and is a co-sponsor of the Respect for Marriage Act, which would repeal the federal Defense of Marriage Act and offer federal recognition of marriages that are valid in the state where the marriage was entered into. She believes that the issue should be decided at the state level. She is also watching on-going court cases that may decide this issue.”
We’ll keep asking.
