Dante Carpenter, chair of the Democratic Party of Hawaii, says his party will review the names of candidates running for office once the filing deadline has passed Tuesday afternoon (June 5).

Over the next few days, the party will decide whether to take any action against candidates that do not meet party requirements. Carpenter said he believed there was a 24-hour window allowing for candidates to withdraw after the filing deadline.

As to taking any legal action against Laura Thielen, who the party has said is not in good standing, Carpenter said a motion has not been filed in 1st Circuit Court regarding her candidacy. But, he added that he did not think there was a time restriction on the filing.

Asked for comment, Thielen said, “I am a member of the Democratic Party. … I have no plans to withdraw my membership or my filing.”
