More than 30 papaya trees have been vandalized on two farms outside of Keaau in the Big Island’s Puna district, Hawaii News Now reports.

Witnesses told police that they saw two men knocking over the trees.

Last July, thousands of papaya trees were felled on the Big Island, likely by machetes.

Hawaii’s papaya trees, which were genetically modified years ago by UH scientists to save them from a deadly ring spot virus, have become the subject of controversy among anti-GMO advocates, though it’s not clear if there’s a connection to the incidents.
