Hawaii’s poorest schools will receive less help than they have in years past from the feds in the form of Title I education money.

Sen. Dan Inouye’s office announced Wednesday that Hawaii will get $45.43 million next year to help pay for programs at schools where a disproportionate number of students live in some form of poverty. This is some $2.4 million less than last year.

Last year, almost half of the state’s public school students qualified for a free or reduced-cost lunch, a poverty indicator.
