The news earlier this week that the city is moving toward auctioning off about 3.5 acres of unused park land in Haleiwa isn’t sitting well with some in the community.

A group of organizations who say they want to save the beach park raised questions about why the valuation of the six parcels that make up the property has dropped. They claim it went from a total $2.7 million in 2009 to $83,000 this year. Basically, they’re concerned that the deck is being stacked in favor of hotel proponent D.G. “Andy” Anderson‘s bid because the minimum is only $300,000.

The Save Haleiwa Beach Park Coalition is also circulating a petition asking the city to not sell the park. The matter will be discussed at Monday’s Budget Committee meeting. Two proposed amendments are on the agenda.
