Later this morning Cayetano’s camp has scheduled a press conference in which the former governor will appear with former Campaign Spending Commission Executive Director Bob Watada to defend the candidate’s record.
Cayetano, the lone anti-rail candidate running for mayor, has come under fire over the past two months for more than $500,000 in illegal campaign contributions that he was asked to pay back after being governor.
This attack came from the pro-rail, construction union group Pacific Resources Partnership, which has also been running television ads highlighting the issue. The topic also led to some heated moments in last week’s PBS mayoral debate.
Here’s a snippet from the press release about today’s event:
Watada aggressively pursued investigations into a number of illegal campaign contribution schemes when he was in charge of that office.
Watada retired in 2005 and moved to Oregon. But he’s back to set the record straight on Cayetano’s campaign donation track record.
Rep. Della Au Belatti, a Former Commissioner for the Campaign Spending Commission and Paul Kuramoto, the Former Chairperson of the Campaign Spending Commission will also be at the press conference to share their expertise as two of five commissioners who oversaw Watada’s investigations.
We’ll see what they have to say. The presser is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
