Hawaii calls Obama its native son. His sister lives here. He comes here to vacation every year. But the Aloha State is waging an underdog campaign to host his presidential records.

In Hawaii, two places have been discussed as potential future library locations: one at the university’s West Oahu campus, and the other on state-controlled land in Honolulu — “a stunning [site] close to the ocean with great views and great access for tourists,” Dasenbrock e-mailed. (That’s Reed Dasenbrock, the vice chancellor of academic affairs at the University of Hawaii in Manoa.)
“It’s really a question of how you frame the narrative of who Obama is and what his presidency is,” he said in an interview. “We think he’s more interestingly framed as being a child of Hawaii: multiracial, pluralistic, global, and that’s our story. Chicago is more a story focused on him being the first black president, which, of course, he is.”
