“Hirono’s vaguely defined ‘advocacy’ for clean energy and sustainability is laughable,” Lee said in a statement. “In 22 years as a state legislator and Lieutenant Governor, the only major energy solution she has gotten behind was the economically irresponsible, failed “gas price cap” that she championed during her unsuccessful run for Governor in 2002.”
Civil Beat left a message with the Hirono campaign asking for comment.
In the TV spot, according to a press release, “Hirono recalls the impact of her mother’s decision to escape an abusive marriage in Japan and bring her children to Hawaii in search of a better life. Literally living paycheck to paycheck, Hirono learned valuable lessons in self-reliance that forged her determination to make Hawaii more self-sufficient, too.”
“It’s a fact that Hawaii is the most food-dependent and oil-dependent state in the country, importing 90% of our oil and energy and 85% of our food from the mainland and other countries,” Hirono said. “But we are not a dependent people, and we deserve an economy and way of life that reflects our self-reliant character.”
