The U.S. Department of Agriculture is giving the University of Hawaii $6 million over four years to create locally produced renewable energy.
The university plans to partner with other universities and private companies to develop high-yielding biofuel feedstocks and establish advanced local biofuel production processes.
Hawaii currently meets 90 percent of its energy needs through imported fossil fuels and has the nation’s highest electric costs.
