University of Hawaii scientists have discovered that whales can in effect plug their ears if it gets too noisy underwater.
This could help the whales cope with an increasingly loud ocean environment. Everything from off-shore drilling to Navy sonar is having a deafening effect on a variety of species.
But other marine scientists caution against letting the discovery become a reason to slow worldwide efforts to quiet the seas.
