Linda Lingle said Sunday (Aug. 12) it was “kind of ironic” that she and Ben Cayetano agree on concerns about the Honolulu rail project.

The two have rarely agreed on anything, and they fought a close gubernatorial election in 1998.

Lingle says Cayetano’s runoff against Kirk Caldwell in the Honolulu mayor’s race will likely boost turnout in the general election — “and that’s a good thing.”

She added that she supports some sort of transit to alleviate traffic in West Oahu. As a U.S. senator, her role in the matter would concentrate on federal funding,
