It’s a parking lot covered with solar panels!

HECO’s generating station in Campbell Industrial Park, which is run on used cooking oil and waste animal fact, is being powered by 450 solar panels that also provide shade for the area parking lot.

The solar panel system provides power for routine operations of the power plant and includes two electric vehicle chargers.

The 120-megawatt generating station has been in service since 2009. In addition to using renewable biofuel exclusively, the plant uses non-potable, recycled water for all industrial operations.

“Campbell Industrial Park is one of the sunniest places on Oahu,” said Robert Isler, manager of generation project development. “This solar array, the largest owned by the utility, takes advantage of that and also provides shade for 34 employee and visitor vehicles.”
