Kaniela Ing, the Democrat running for the state House seat representing South Maui, has responded to Hawaii GOP allegations regarding campaign spending laws.
Excerpts from Ing’s statement to the press:
I am disappointed that the Hawaii Republican Party and Representative Fontaine have stooped to the type of clearly false, negative attacks that big money special interests are using all over the country. This has no place here on Maui. …
We reported no fundraisers because we held no fundraisers so far; South Maui residents know this. … This isn’t the type of campaign where a candidate invites a bunch of developers and lobbyists to sit in a restaurant and collects $500 donations. … My contributions came from everyday people writing checks mainly while I was out knocking on doors listening.
Every penny of every campaign contribution and expenditure was publicly filed and is available online. I invite the public to judge for themselves on the campaign spending commission website. …
Representative Fontaine, I will meet you at any time and place of your choosing, so the public can see and hear the truth directly from you and me, instead of mud-slinging from either of our parties. …
Ing faces Republican incumbent George Fontaine in the general election.
