There must be something particularly tempting about stealing money from the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources

For the second time this year, a former employee has been charged with stealing funds.

Kainoa Gonsalves, from Wailuku, has been ordered to pay back the $23,710 she stole from the department from fees that she collected for commercial marine licenses, The Maui News reports.

Her attorney said she was having a tough time financially providing for her family.

Gonsalves was being paid somewhere between $25,668 and $39,480, according to Civil Beat’s state salary database.

In May, another employee, Wesley Choi, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for stealing $125,000 from DLNR.
