Set to retire at the end of the year, Akaka today chaired a hearing of the Subcommittee on Oversight of Government Management, the Federal Workforce, and the District of Columbia for the last time. He’s headed the subcommittee since 2007, and was the ranking Democrat when Republicans controlled the Senate.
Before the hearing, Akaka was awarded a medal for “meritorious service” by the Office Of Personnel Management and presented a lei by the ranking Republican on the panel, Tea Party Sen. Ron Johnson. That’s it in the photo below, from Akaka’s Facebook page. That shot captures the moment Akaka swore in witnesses for the final time.
Here’s a video from Johnson’s office showing the lei presentation and comments honoring Sen. Akaka.
