Tanji, also known as Ed, spent more than eight years leading reporters and photographers as the city editor at The Maui News. He retired in 2009.

He continued to blog and write columns for The Maui News after his retirement.

Tanji spent more than 40 years reporting in Hawaii. He also worked at the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.
