From our Washington bureau earlier this morning in DC808:

Today is the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York City and here in Washington, D.C.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is speaking right now at the Pentagon Memorial. President Barack Obama is next.

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie announced yesterday that flags would fly at half-staff in observance of Patriot Day.

Two other Hawaii-related notes:

  • Today is the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Iniki, which hit all islands but particularly devastated Kauai in 1992. Mayor Bernard Carvalho has a remembrance in The Garden Island today. Hawaii News Now had a retrospective last night.
  • Today is Sen. Dan Akaka’s 88th birthday. Look for a picture of him with birthday cake later.
