Oracle Yacht Team Files Paperwork for Winter Training on Lanai

Larry Ellison’s moving in, slowly but surely. Pacific Business News reports that his Oracle Team USA yacht racing team wants to make Lanai’s commercial harbor it’s winter base.

The team includes a 72-foot catamaran-class sail boat and four support boats. PBN reports:

Oracle Team USA has applied for several permits, including a Special Management Area Use permit, with the Hawaii Department of Transportation to set up operations at Kamalapau Harbor on Lanai from December through March. The harbor is primarily used by Young Brothers Ltd. for its weekly barge service.

Oracle Team USA requires a temporary spot for its winter, “sea trials, testing, training, research and data collection to support development and enhancement of its maritime sailing methods and technologies,” according to the document prepared by Honolulu-based R.M. Towill Corp. and published in the state Office of Environmental Qualify Control’s Environmental Notice.
