Last month, Big Island County Clerk Jamae Kawauchi told reports that an audit of the county’s voter rolls showed four people had voted twice in the 2010 election and about 50 people had registered more than once. 

Now, the Hawaii Police Department has started an investigation into the voter fraud allegations.

The investigation was launched based on information provided by the Hawaii County Office of Elections involving elections conducted in 2010.

Voter Fraud, under section 19.3.5 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes, is a class C felony.

Last month, other county clerks told reporters that they sometimes see a handful of people, usually seniors, who sometimes vote twice by accident — usually because they sent in their absentee late and weren’t sure about it arriving in time. Redistricting was also suggested as a possible reason for residents’ double registrations.
