Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz told Civil Beat last week that the administration was moving decisively toward importing liquefied natural gas to Hawaii to help alleviate the high cost of oil-generated electricity for consumers.

But it’s not an idea embraced by all.

Jeff Mikulina, executive director of Blue Planet Foundation, questions whether natural gas will really provide lower rates for the long-term and stresses a number of environmental and logistical hurdles in a piece for Civil Beat Monday.

In short, he writes, “LNG is liquefied methane. It’s not clean. It’s not renewable. It’s not local. It’s not sustainable.”
