Linda Lingle, who vetoed civil unions legislation as governor, said she would be open to the idea of a constitutional amendment question on defining marriage as between a man and a woman. She acknowledged that people’s attitudes over the years, especially younger generations, have evolved.

“Perhaps our society has changed,” Lingle said.

Mazie Hirono, who has long supported the equal rights of LGBT Americans, faulted Lingle for inviting LGBT rights supporters to her veto ceremony. Lingle countered that she invited supporters of both sides.

“It was a very difficult decision,” Lingle said.
