Maui County will spend $5.1 million to install an eight-turbine wind farm at the Central Maui Landfill in Puunene to settle air pollution allegations brought by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The EPA had alleged that Maui County didn’t install its gas collection and monitoring system on time.
The settlement also requires the county to increase its gas monitoring capabilities to help reduce the threat of underground fires.
The windmills will be installed near the landfill’s self-service facility.
