McGovern, Rare Democratic Presidential Candidate to Lose Hawaii, Dies
The big news here in Washington this weekend was the passing of George McGovern, who ran against Richard Nixon in 1972 and lost in a landslide.
The anti-war McGovern even lost Hawaii, carrying only Massachusetts and Washington, D.C. Nixon was eventually implicated in the Watergate break-in of Democratic National Committee headquarters and an ensuing cover-up.

Hawaii Sen. Daniel Inouye, who, like McGovern, was first sworn in to the U.S. Senate in 1963, put out the following statement Sunday:
I am very saddened to learn of George McGovern’s passing. He was without question one of the most decent members of the United States Senate. We need more George McGoverns today. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.
