Inside Honolulu reports:
The company that received one of Honolulu’s most lucrative rail contracts — worth $1.4 billion — secured even more work in Florida.
According to the Railway Gazette International, AnsaldoBreda won a $300 million contract to build metro cars for Miami-Dade Transit.
AnsaldoBreda is one part of Ansaldo Honolulu Joint Venture, which was hired by the city to design, build, operate and maintain the $5.26 billion fixed guideway system.
The other part of the joint venture is Ansaldo STS, and like AnsaldoBreda is under the same Finnemeccanica umbrella.
Ansaldo didn’t get off to the best of starts in Honolulu. There were worries of financial troubles and possible corruption as the city considered entering into an agreement with the company.
The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation was eventually convinced that going with Ansaldo was a good deal.
