The Campaign Spending Commission today ruled that state Rep. John Mizuno and his wife, Honolulu City Council District 6 candidate May Mizuno, did not break the law in their use of allegedly shared campaign signs.

The complaint, filed in early October by the Hawaii Republican Party, contended that the two broke campaign spending law because such signs are considered non-monetary contributions that should be disclosed.

But according to a press release sent out by Rep. Mizuno, the Friends of May Mizuno committee bought the signs at fair-market value.

He wrote: “This shows how petty the Republican Party can be.  It is unfortunate that today we see a bunch of negative ads and outrageously offensive campaign commercials attacking the opposing candidate.  I have always stated ‘to denigrate another person to elevate yourself or your Party displays fear, hatred, and bigotry, and I don’t believe voters would want to elect such a negative person into office.’”
