Major news for Honolulu’s rail system.

DC808 reports:

The Federal Transit Administration today told members of Congress it intends to sign a $1.55 billion funding guarantee agreement for the Honolulu rail project.

Sen. Dan Inouye’s office blasted out the news a few minutes ago, and an FTA spokeswoman confirmed it to me in a call just now. The notification, sent today, according to the FTA, starts a 30-day notice period. No congressional action is required. After those 30 days, the agreement can be signed about 10 days before the key end-of-2012 deadline.

More updates coming soon.
