HSTA’s Leeward district reps passed a bill Tuesday night called “A Quality Teacher in Every Classroom Act.”

The full HSTA board will hear the proposal, which aims to improve education in Hawaii by increasing teacher quality.

More than 56 percent of the state’s teachers leave after five years, creating up to 1,600 vacancies annually to be filled primarily with inexperienced teachers, according to a news release from Hawaii Teachers Taking A Stand.

The group wants to solve the problem of retaining and recruiting effective teachers and believes poor pay creates the current revolving door.
