State Senate President Shan Tsutsui on Thursday (Dec. 27) accepted the job of Hawaii lieutenant governor.

He takes the place of Brian Schatz, who was sworn in earlier today as Hawaii’s new U.S. senator, filling the vacancy created by the death of Dan Inouye earlier this month.

Tsutsui, 41, is a Maui senator. Democratic Party members on the island now will have to recommend three potential replacements for Tsutsui.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie will make the final pick, likely before the start of the 2013 Legislature convenes on Jan. 16.
