The state will respond to the Hawaii teachers union’s latest contract settlement proposal Jan. 25, HSTA President Okabe said in a statement this evening.

He said negotiations went well today, particularly talks about teacher evaluations.

HSTA is asking for 4 percent raises for the next three years, plus a restoration of the 5 percent pay cuts they involuntarily took in 2011. The state in December offered the union 2 percent raises and restoring the pay cuts. (Check out Civil Beat’s story here.)

Okabe said he hopes the recent arbitration award UPW won, which included 3.2 percent raises, will help teacher get the 4 percent they are asking for.
