The governor wants to up marriage license fees from $60 to $100 starting July 1. It’s one of many new revenue streams the Legislature is looking at this session.

The marriage fee money helps fund domestic violence and child abuse programs. This isn’t new, and those programs certainly need and deserve the dough, but it still strikes me as odd.

Call me a romantic, but it’s sad that the money a person spends to become licensed to marry people — people, who in theory, are celebrating the start of a lifetime of love and happiness — goes toward funding the attempted antidote to all the negative junk that some families face.

Maybe it’s cursed money creating these social problems.
