Maui Rep. Joe Souki Elected House Speaker

Despite a last-minute attempt to derail his nomination, Maui Rep. Joe Souki has been named the new House speaker by his colleagues.

Calvin Say, who had served as speaker for 14 years, introduced a floor amendment from him and 17 of his supporters to elect Marcus Oshiro speaker. It failed.

John Mizuno is the new vice speaker and Scott Saiki is the new majority leader. Now they’ll try to name new committee chairs — if they have the votes.
