Hawaii isn’t the only state facing costly new EPA rules designed to reduce emissions from coal-fired power plants

The majority of Hawaii’s electricity comes from oil. But the rules impact the state’s generators nonetheless. 

HECO has said it will cost ratepayers $1 billion to make the upgrades, though the utility can switch to burning diesel instead. 

In the case of Arizona, the state’s attorney general is seeking a state exemption from the rules that are aimed at reducing air pollution and haze. 

Attorney General Tom Horne called the EPA rules “an absurd action that would significantly raise utility rates for most Arizonians without providing any benefit to anyone,” during an interview with the Phoenix Business Journal.
