The bills, sponsored by the Abercrombie administration, appear to be an effort to address what happened to the Haleiwa Farmers’ Market last year, which the state removed from a triangular area along the Haleiwa Bypass Road because of liability concerns.
The proposed bills would actually prohibit vending any “product, service, merchandise, or food” in highway airspace and allow for immediate removal of vendors. But the bills allow the DOT director to make exceptions.
SB 1209 has a hearing Monday (Feb. 4) in Senate Transportation and International Affairs, while HB 978 has a hearing Wednesday (Feb. 6) in House Transportation.
