UPDATE 1 p.m. HST: Chuck Hagel was confirmed 58-41 by the U.S. Senate, with Sens. Hirono and Schatz again voting with the majority.

The Hill has this updated report. Meanwhile, Hirono released this statement:

“Senator Hagel brings an impressive record of service and is a highly qualified choice to lead the Pentagon. Our country needs Senator Hagel’s strong leadership immediately, as the Department of Defense faces the possibility of significant budget reductions that will affect military readiness at a time when there are many threats to our national security around the world.”

Earlier, Politico had this report. Excerpts:

The Senate voted 71-27 on Tuesday to end debate on Chuck Hagel’s nomination to become secretary of Defense, ending a Republican campaign that forced Democrats to fight for every step toward confirmation, which is expected later in the day.

The former Republican senator from Nebraska needed at least 60 votes to clear the procedural hurdle. …

Hawaii Sens. Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz voted with the majority.
