Hawaii isn’t immune to random acts of gun violence.

Someone fired shots at Punahou School on Saturday night, shattering windows in the kindergarten and first grade classroom building. Police believe the shots were fired from a passing vehicle.

Two classrooms facing Manoa Road were damaged. Mike Walker, principal of the junior school, sent parents the following message:

At this point there is no reason to believe that the incident was anything other than a random act of vandalism. Regardless, safety on our campus is a priority. Consequently, we have increased and repositioned the security presence across campus and in the K-1 Neighborhood.  We will continue to work with HPD and take their advice regarding any outcomes of the investigation.

The most important thing we can do for our children is to maintain a sense of normalcy. The classrooms have been cleaned up to minimize the visual impact for the students’ arrival this morning, and their day and instruction will continue as planned. Students will simply be told that the windows got broken over the weekend and are getting fixed.
