That means no school for the keiki. Hanalei Elementary School is closed today because of the torrents, which have caused dangerous road conditions and forced officials to block off Hanalei bridge. The district also had to discontinue school bus services from Haena to Hanalei.
All other Kauai schools are open today, according to a Hawaii Department of Education press release.
Meantime, Civil Beat’s own Nick Grube — who’s been doing some reporting on Kauai for the past few days — is stuck on the road out from Hanalei. He tells us that cars are lined up waiting to leave. Wish him luck!
